Buy these Poinsettias:
- Choose a poinsettia plant with dark green foliage down to the soil line.
- Choose poinsettia plants with bracts (modified leaves) that are completely colored.
- The poinsettia should look full, balanced and attractive from all sides.
- The poinsettia plant should be 2 1/2 times taller than the diameter of the container.
- Check the poinsettia's maturity. Check the true flowers which are located at the base of the colored bracts. If the flowers are green or red-tipped and fresh looking the bloom will "hold" longer than if yellow pollen is covering the flowers.
Avoid These Poinsettias:
- Poinsettias plants that are drooping or wilting.
- Poinsettias with a lot of green around the bract edges.
- Poinsettias plants that are displayed in paper or plastic sleeves. Plants held in sleeves will deteriorate quickly
- Poinsettias plants that have been displayed or crowded close together. Crowding can cause premature bract loss.
- Poinsettias plants with fallen or yellowed leaves.
- Poinsettias with yellow pollen on the true flowers. Pollen on the true flowers is a sign the plant is fully mature and will soon wilt.
- Check the poinsettia plants soil. If its wet and the plant is wilted, this could be an indication of root rot.
Poinsettia Care:
- Place the poinsettia in a sunny location.
- Do not let any part of plant touch anything cold such as window panes.
- Indoor temperatures from 60 to 70ᄚF is ideal for long plant life.
- High temperatures will shorten the life of the colorful leaves(bracts).
- Don't overwater. Water only when the soil is dry.
- Placing your poinsettia in a cool place (55 to 60ᄚF) at night will extend blooming time.
- Do not fertilize when plant is in bloom.
- Avoid temperature fluctuations such as warm or cold drafts.
- Avoid placing the poinsettia plant where it will be bumped by passing people or pets.
- If outdoors, be sure to have it covered when outdoor temperatures are below 50ᄚF.
